Stuck for play activity ideas?

As a parent to 3 active boys, I frequently find myself steering my forehead to the nearest available hard surface........if they're not making too much noise, they're using my furniture as their own personal soft-play area, and as for rainy days...............well.........I've finally discovered a solution to the "what can we do today" questions, and the relentless chorus of "I'm bored".......

The solution is simple, and FREE! It's a website run by a qualified teacher and mother-of-two, Melitsa Avila. Go to the Play Activities website, and subscribe to their newsletter. You will receive daily free fun, educational activities to try at home with your kids.

Many of the activities are creative and craft-based so would make fantastic party activities too!

Do you Twitter?

I've just discovered a new distraction called Twitter. It took a little while to understand the concept, but it's a different kind of social network - rather like Facebook without the extras. If, like me, you like reading everyone's Facebook updates, then you'll probably like Twitter, because, on the surface, that's all Twitter is - updates!

It may sound simple (and indeed it is), and you may wonder, what's the point in logging on to Twitter to tell anyone who cares to follow my updates that I'm just about to put the washing in the dryer? Well.........that is a very valid point, but it only takes a while to realise the power of Twitter lies in whose updates (or tweets, I believe they may be called) you follow, and how many people you can, through social networking, get to follow you.

As a website owner, I can use Twitter to direct people to my special offers, competitions, new products, this blog, or indeed share an inane pondering as to how long exactly it will take my 4 yr old son to finish his soup - he's still slurping away, approximately 43 minutes since I presented it to him for lunch.

As a follower, I can get immediate updates on the news by following the BBC newsfeed, learn business news and tips from Business Groups, keep up to date with friends and colleagues, and anything else that interests me.

Simple it may be, but strangely addictive too! All you need to do is choose to follow somebody - then you can see who they are following, and choose to follow them if you wish. You can also search for other users, and invite people over so they can follow you.

Why not give it a try? If you choose to follow my tweets, you'll find me here:

Tinti Bath Care Products

We're pleased to offer a new range of Tinti Bath Products. You can buy them as single items, in packs or in pre-filled party bags.

The first product is the very popular colour changing bath tablet. In packs of 9, and in 3 colours (red, blue and yellow), they are made from natural sources, contain no preservatives, soap or SLS, and kind to young skin. Simply drop one of them into your bath, watch as it fizzes about and turns the water into a different colour. The colour doesn't fade at all, and leaves no residue on the skin or bath.

You can even mix the tablets together, so children can learn as well as having fun in the bath! Our particular favourite is a combination of blue and yellow - they fizz individually, and gradually the different coloured waters mingle and creat a green bath - we call it the "Shrek" bath!

The other product is the Tinti Magic Bath Ball. This is more than a bath bomb. Made with natural ingredients, free from preservatives and SLS, these bath bombs are simply magical.
Drop it in your bath and watch them fizz about, turning the water a different colour (red, yellow or blue). Once it's dissolved, a hidden capsule will be revealed - what does it contain? In a pack of 3, we found an octopus, a butterfly and a giraffe! Fantastic fun. They come in packs of 3 or in pre-filled party bags.

Face Lift!

Funky Dory Party Bags has had a recent face lift, and we couldn't be more pleased with it! We asked Katie at Pink Iris Logo Design to come up with a retro, vibrant feel, and we think she's hit the perfect note.

Even our beloved frog logo had a bit of a "touch up", and we think he looks so much the better for it!

To mark the new image we launched a "name the frog" competition. After many, hugely imaginative entries (some of our favourites being Funky D' Frog, Fergal, Fester, Jazz and Flash) we decided to call him (or her) Dory. It was quite logical as he's become an integral part of the logo.

Skype Me!

Wow - what a great tool the VOIP phone is, and what a luddite I feel for not having found out until now!

My good friend, who runs a website selling wooden and traditional toys, Knot Just Jigs suggested it to me, so being the proverbial bull who runs at the gate, by lunchtime the next day I had installed it and was in a store purchasing a stereo headset.

The great thing about this internet phone is that customers can get hold of me whenever they like - either through the telephone, via voicemail or via my mobile phone through redirection.

The best thing though, is that calls between Skype users are absolutely free.

I now have to figure out the quickest way to answer the phone, engage headset and sound like a sensible person who hasn't just rushed into the office from filling the dishwasher!

Party Time

It was our middle son's 6th birthday party this weekend, and we chose the easiest option - get someone else to do it! Well, that's not strictly true as they had one hour of football and sports at the local leisure centre (organised by the leisure centre staff), followed by a tea party (organised by me, my Mum and Mother-in-Law).

As always on these occasions, I ignore my own well-researched advice and leave everything to the last minute - inluding the personalised party boxes which were hot off the printer with approximately 30 minutes to go, and filled at the last minute. I found this quite easy, because the boxes snap together in about 1 second, and are very rigid so it's easy to chuck a few fillers in there.Having lost the list of invitees, it was impossible to check that everybody had replied, and seeing as we are quite new to the area, quite embarrassing to approach random mothers in the playground to see if their child a) had been invited and b) were coming!

In the end, I decided not to stress about it, but to go with the flow, even though I had no idea who was and wasn't coming - and took the view that this all added to the excitement.......

In the end we had a very good turn out and everybody seemed to really enjoy themselves. All the kids were really well behaved too, and ate most of the food, so a big success in my book.

Here's some pictures of my boys (from left to right - Matthew 8, Adam 6, Oliver 3) who really did us proud on the day.

Bags full of Character

We recently introduced character party bags onto the site, and so far they are selling really well. The most popular characters are Charlie & Lola, Disney Princesses, and for boys, Spiderman.

We have a range of filled character party bags, or you may choose one of our other party bag filler combinations and select your favourite character.

So far we have party bags in the following characters: Disney Princesses, Charlie & Lola, Spiderman, Batman, Barbie Fairytopia, Lazytown, Roary the Racing Car, In The Night Garden, Dora The Explorer and Disney/Pixar Cars.

New characters will be added over the few months, so keep your eye out for your favourite!

The Boys

I just wanted to post a picture of our 3 boys taken on a day out last summer.

We decided on the spur of the moment to jump in the car and visit the Robin Hood Festival at Sherwood Forest. It was one of those days that you don't plan, and because of this was all the more enjoyable. We missed the jousting display (didn't fancy waiting around for 3 hours in order to get a good view through the crowds), but the boys loved the medieval story-tellers, the gift shop, and even had a go at archery!

A new best seller!

Until now, the best selling product at Funky Dory Party Bags has been our personalised party box, specifically the Fairy Princess design.

In total there are 5 designs to chose from - Fairy Princess, Monkey, Pirate, Dinosaur and Cow. All the images are taken from original paintings by talented children's artist, Helen Broadhead, and are unique to Funky Dory Party Bags. We can customise your box with the message of your choice - popular messages being a child's name, or a simple "thank you for coming to my party". They are also very popular as activity boxes for weddings, and at only 85p each, they are outstanding value.

Although these boxes are extremely popular, it's no surprise to me that they have been overtaken by another unique product - the filled animal mug. This is a plastic animal mug in 4 designs (crocodile, monkey, elephant, giraffe), filled with a balloon, square of stickers a toy (optional), and wrapped in a cellophane party bag. I believe the reason for their popularity is the fact they provide an unusual alternative to a party bag, and are equally suitable for boys and girls.

Bath Time Party Bags now in!

New for April at Funky Dory Party Bags are the Tinti bathwater colours. Dermatologically tested, these tablets are made with natural ingredients, with no preservatives and leave no residue on the bath or skin.

They are fantastic fun for children aged 3 and over and can be used in the bath, paddling pool, or even a bowl of water.

Simply drop the tablet into the bathwater. It then bubbles and turns the water either red, blue or yellow. You can buy them as a single tablet, in a pack of 9, or in filled party bags for boys and girls.

What's it all about, then?

That, as they say, is a very good question! Quite simply, this blog is about me, my family, and my business. It's a place to feature new products, and to share news of the websites.

Occasionally I might pop in a few pictures of my family, just to prove I don't sit hunched over the computer ALL the time....

I've been selling filled party bags and personalised party boxes online since September 2005. It began as a hobby which I did to exercise the brain cells whilst I took a career break to raise my young family. The plan was always to re-enter the world of gainful employment when the boys all started school.

After a year or so, however, it became apparent that people actually liked the products I was offering, and sales were increasing significantly month on month. So I decided to make a go at my own business.

This decision wasn't a difficult one. I'd been out of the workplace for a considerable time ( 6 years to be exact), and I was beginning to find the prospect of returning to work not only daunting, but actually quite hard to achieve.

So, fast-forward a year or so and the decision and hard work that, it had to be said, went into building the business is finally showing some reward.
